Chalk is wildly entertaining! Alex is an inventive, engaging performer, and the play is as moving as it is hilarious. Alex engages the audience in using their imagination as they journey with him through the story. Kids love how funny and playful it is, while it pulls on the heart strings of the adults. It feels like a particular gift when theater makers remember that the kind of play we do on stage isn’t so different from the kind of play we did as children. Chalk, by Alex Curtis, not only remembers this, but revels in it. The one-man clown show, while seemingly sweet and straightforward, makes magic of the ordinary and dazzles with the mundane. Some chalk, a coat rack, a spray bottle, and a sweet-faced man play beautifully together, reminding the audience that with a little imagination, simplicity can be the seed of boundless joy.

Alex Curtis’ ‘Chalk’ is both original and nostalgic, elegant and brave.
